Outdoor Plant Care Guide
When buying plants for your garden as long as a few guidelines are followed you should have very few, if any, that will die. Always make sure that the plant is wet before it goes into the ground. If the plant is dry then it is very hard for the compost around the roots of the plants to become saturated and during hot spells the plants could start to perish very quickly. Generally I recommend standing plants in a bucket of water for least 10 minutes, that way you know that root system has plenty of moisture before entering its new home.

When planting your new plants always spend time on preparing the hole in which it will be situated. Make sure you dig plenty of organic matter into the soil, whether it be well rotted manure or a peat free compost. Both of these will ensure that the plant can get all of the essential nutrients the plants need.

It is also essential when planning for your garden on the amount of plants to buy. There is nothing worse than planting too close together and then in a year or two after planting everything becomes overcrowded. Allow them to merge naturally over a space of say five years. If you want to fill in temporarily, try using bulbs, annuals or perennials which can be moved a lot more easily than a shrub could.

Once you have considered the above the final thing to remember is - always keep the plant watered during the first 1 or 2 summers until the roots have become established. During the summer this needs to be done every evening during sunny days. Try to water the base of the plant rather than the leaves. Add mulch around the base of the plants to reduce moisture loss. Try to keep grass and weeds from around your plants, as these will increase moisture loss from the soil.
